Delhi-NCR Lashed by Heavy Rain, Gurugram Faces Severe Waterlogging

New Delhi/Gurugram – Intense evening showers battered Delhi-NCR on Wednesday, leaving several key areas submerged in water and daily life severely disrupted. In Gurugram, the situation worsened as residents reported “basement pools” forming in luxury housing complexes, prompting netizens to react with sarcasm and concern online.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Najafgarh recorded the highest rainfall at 60 mm between 5:30 PM and 8:30 PM, followed by Aya Nagar (50.5 mm) and Pragati Maidan (37 mm). Despite the downpour, Safdarjung, Delhi’s primary weather station, registered only 1.4 mm, revealing the patchy nature of the storm.

The IMD, which had initially issued an orange alert, upgraded it to a red alert by evening, warning of moderate to intense rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning across Delhi and the NCR.

Multiple areas across Delhi and Gurugram reported heavy waterlogging and traffic snarls, including:

  • Nehru Place, Kailash Colony, Lajpat Nagar, Aurobindo Marg, Siri Fort Road, Chirag Delhi Flyover, Outer Ring Road, and Akshardham

  • G K Marg, Rail Bhawan, Ashram, ITO, Pul Prahladpur, M B Road, Shadipur, Madhuban Chowk, and NH-8

In Gurugram, videos went viral showing cars submerged in water and basements turned into impromptu swimming pools, leading netizens to dub them as “multi-crore homes with basement pools.” Social media buzzed with posts highlighting urban planning failures and rising concerns about monsoon preparedness.

Earlier in the day, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 26.4°C, with humidity at 81% and a predicted maximum temperature of 34°C. While the rains brought temporary relief from the heat, the severe infrastructure stress they exposed sparked larger concerns.

Municipal authorities and emergency services were deployed in low-lying and heavily affected zones, while IMD urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay indoors, and report blocked drains or trees to civic helplines.

The IMD continues to forecast more rainfall in the coming days, advising caution and preparedness as monsoon intensifies.
