President Droupadi Murmu Receives Lisbon’s Highest Honour

In a proud moment for India’s diplomatic status on the global stage, President Droupadi Murmu was awarded the prestigious ‘City Key of Honour’ by the Mayor of Lisbon during a special ceremony at City Hall on Monday evening.

This significant recognition coincides with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Portugal, underscoring the deep cultural and historical ties between the two nations. The honour, one of Lisbon’s most esteemed civic accolades, is traditionally awarded to distinguished global figures as a symbol of goodwill and friendship.

President Murmu received a warm welcome from the Mayor, city officials, and members of the Indian diaspora. In her address, she expressed heartfelt gratitude for the gesture and praised Lisbon’s spirit of inclusion. Lisbon is a city of openness, where diversity is celebrated and cultures are embraced. I am deeply touched by this gesture and the friendship it represents,” she stated.

She further emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties through enhanced cooperation in trade, education, technology, and culture. Her speech highlighted a shared vision for a future characterized by mutual respect, collaboration, and global peace.

President Murmu’s visit to Portugal is part of a broader diplomatic initiative aimed at enhancing India’s international partnerships. During her stay, she also attended a formal banquet hosted by Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, further solidifying the strong ties between the two countries
