Delhi-NCR Thunderstorm Brings Relief from Heatwaves, But Leaves Trail of Destruction
New Delhi, May 2, 2025 — Early Friday morning, Delhi-NCR was struck by a powerful thunderstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and lightning, bringing much-needed respite from the ongoing heatwave but also resulting in the tragic loss of lives and property damage.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for the region, predicting severe weather activity. Thunderstorm wind speeds touched 70 to 80 kmph, toppling trees and damaging homes across multiple areas in the capital.
In Zafarpur Kalan, a large tree fell on a house, resulting in the death of four people, including three children. In another heart-wrenching incident in Chhawla, a roof collapsed, trapping four individuals under the debris. Rescue operations are underway, with the disaster management teams deployed in affected localities.
The thunderstorm, though destructive, brought a significant drop in temperature, providing temporary relief from the intense heatwave that had gripped Delhi for the past few weeks. Morning temperatures dipped by 4–6°C, and the air quality showed signs of improvement due to rainfall washing away pollutants.
However, the storm left a trail of destruction:
Several trees were uprooted across South and West Delhi.
Power outages were reported in Dwarka, Najafgarh, and parts of Noida and Gurugram.
Waterlogging disrupted road traffic in Connaught Place, Moti Bagh, and Outer Ring Road.
Multiple reports of damaged vehicles parked under weak structures or trees were received.
The IMD has forecast moderate rainfall with thunderstorms for the next 48 hours. Winds may continue at 40–50 kmph, especially during the afternoon and evening hours. While the rainfall will help in bringing down maximum temperatures, the public is advised to remain cautious and avoid venturing out during storm alerts.
Authorities have urged citizens to stay indoors during high winds, avoid sheltering under trees or temporary structures, and keep emergency numbers handy.
This sudden weather shift is attributed to an active western disturbance over North India. The IMD suggests that the weather may stabilize by Sunday, with pleasant conditions likely to prevail for a few days.
