Red Alert Issued in Jammu & Kashmir as Region Braces for Heavy Rainfall, Flash Floods
Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir have issued a red alert for the next 24 hours as the region prepares for intense rainfall, driven by a combination of active monsoon winds and a western disturbance. The alert is in place until July 17, with the Jammu division and parts of South Kashmir expected to be the worst affected.
According to the Kashmir Weather Forecast, the current system could bring widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of flash floods, landslides, and disruption of essential services. Areas with poor drainage infrastructure and those previously impacted by floods have been placed on high alert.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has advised residents to stay indoors, avoid flood-prone routes, and closely follow updates from official weather sources. Non-essential travel to hilly areas and the Kashmir Valley has been strongly discouraged.
Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), stated that cloudy weather with intermittent light to moderate rain and thundershowers is expected, with intense showers at isolated locations. He added that fresh rain spells are forecasted from July 18 to 21.
The Srinagar district administration has issued a weather advisory urging citizens, particularly those living near the Jhelum River, its tributaries, and streams, to stay away from water bodies.
In its official statement, the District Magistrate’s office specifically warned tourists, Shikara riders, boat operators, and sand extractors to avoid travel on Dal Lake, the Jhelum, and other water bodies during this period.
Emergency helpline numbers have been activated for public assistance:

Local administrations across vulnerable districts like Anantnag, Kulgam, Kathua, Poonch, Rajouri, and Ramban have been put on high alert. Rescue teams, disaster management forces, and emergency units are on standby.
Officials have emphasized that power lines, communication infrastructure, and roads may be impacted due to possible landslides and waterlogging. Residents are urged to report unusual water levels and follow all safety instructions until the red alert is lifted.
