Delhi Zoo Reopens After Temporary Closure Over Avian Flu

The National Zoological Park in New Delhi has reopened to visitors starting today after being temporarily closed due to a case of avian influenza. The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has confirmed that the zoo is now safe for public entry and will operate with full precautionary measures in place.

The park had been closed since August 30 after a waterbird in the aviary tested positive for avian influenza. Following this incident, authorities took immediate action to restrict public access and conduct thorough checks as per biosafety protocols. The Ministry reported that all necessary surveillance and safety guidelines issued by the relevant authorities were fully adhered to before reopening the zoo.

According to officials, the zoo will continue to implement strict preventive measures to ensure the well-being of both animals and visitors. These measures include enhanced monitoring of bird enclosures, sanitization of high-contact areas, and regular health updates from veterinary staff. Visitors may also be required to follow specific safety instructions while entering sensitive enclosures.

The National Zoological Park is one of Delhi’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing thousands of visitors each week. Its temporary closure led to a decline in visitor numbers, especially on weekends. With the zoo’s reopening, families, students, and wildlife enthusiasts are expected to return in large numbers.

The Ministry emphasized that biosafety guidelines remain a top priority. All necessary actions, such as area sanitization, enclosure screenings, and careful observation of birds and animals, were taken before allowing visitors back into the park. Officials added that there is currently no threat to the public, and the situation is fully under control.

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, has been a recurring challenge in wildlife areas, especially during seasonal changes. However, authorities reassured the public that prompt action helped prevent the virus from spreading further within the zoo.

The reopening is expected to boost weekend tourism and provide a safe outdoor experience for Delhi residents. Visitors are advised to follow the instructions of zoo staff, avoid touching barriers, and maintain general hygiene during their visit.

With safety protocols in place, the Delhi Zoo is now ready to welcome guests once again, offering a secure and enjoyable outing for families and wildlife lovers.
