Delhi Schools To Boost Rainwater Harvesting Before Monsoon
The Delhi Government has announced a significant initiative to enhance water conservation efforts in the national capital ahead of the monsoon season. Under this new plan, rainwater harvesting systems in 75 government schools across Delhi will be revitalized and made fully functional.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that this initiative is expected to generate an annual rainwater harvesting capacity of nearly 50 crore liters. The project aims to improve groundwater recharge, promote sustainable water use, and raise awareness about water conservation among students and local communities.
According to officials, the project will commence before the onset of the monsoon so that schools can effectively collect and store rainwater during the rainy season. The government recognizes that educational institutions can play a crucial role in fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that a corrective action plan has already been developed to restore the systems. This plan includes desilting the pits, replacing old filter media, properly channeling rainwater pipes, and ensuring better access for regular maintenance.
Furthermore, the Delhi Government will adopt the ‘Ehsaas’ model approved by the Delhi Jal Board. Officials noted that this model is recognized for being cost-effective and requiring minimal maintenance, making it suitable for long-term implementation in schools and public institutions.
This initiative comes at a time when water conservation and groundwater depletion are significant concerns in the national capital. Authorities hope that reviving these systems will help alleviate pressure on groundwater resources and encourage responsible water management practices.
Officials further stated that the project reflects the government’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability and public participation in water conservation efforts throughout Delhi.
