India Celebrates Historic One-Two Finish at Commonwealth Games 2026
Glasgow, Scotland – India had a reason to celebrate at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow, as para-athletes Dilip Mahadu Gavit and Mohammed Basil Morssinganakathi achieved a remarkable one-two finish in the men’s 100m T47 event. Gavit clinched the gold medal with a record-breaking time of 10.71 seconds, while Basil secured the silver medal with a time of 10.83 seconds, marking a significant moment for Indian athletics.
The race unfolded at Scotstoun Stadium, where Gavit showcased an exceptional performance that not only won him gold but also shattered the previous Games record. Basil, closely trailing behind, recorded a season-best time, adding to the excitement of the Indian contingent. England’s Kevin Santos took home the bronze medal, finishing in 10.85 seconds, narrowly ahead of Australia’s Jaydon Page, who finished fourth with a time of 10.97 seconds.
For Gavit, this gold medal symbolizes a significant milestone in a journey marked by adversity. Hailing from the village of Toran Dongari near Nashik, Maharashtra, he faced a life-altering challenge at just five years old when a fall from a tree resulted in a severe injury to his right arm, ultimately leading to an amputation below the elbow due to delayed medical treatment. Instead of seeing this setback as an end, Gavit pursued running and found his path in para-athletics.
His potential was recognized by coach Vaijnath Kale, who helped steer him toward professional sports. Gavit’s previous accolades include winning gold in the men’s 400m T47 at the 2022 Asian Para Games, a victory that also marked India’s 100th medal at the event. He later advanced to the finals of the same event at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
The extraordinary achievements of Gavit and Basil not only signify their individual successes but also highlight the rising momentum of India’s para-sports campaign. Their one-two finish contributed to India’s medal tally reaching 15 at that point, including three golds, nine silvers, and three bronzes. Beyond enhancing the medal count, the performances of Gavit and Basil underscored the growing strength and confidence of Indian para-athletics on the international stage.
