Amit Shah Chairs 31st Southern Zonal Council Meeting in Tamil Nadu

Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired the 31st Southern Zonal Council meeting in Tamil Nadu on Thursday, which brought together political leaders and senior officials from across the southern region to address issues requiring better coordination between states and the Centre. The meeting took place in the Kovalam-Mahabalipuram area near Chennai and focused on several inter-state, security, and development concerns.

Representatives from Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana attended the meeting, along with officials representing Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Key participants included Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, and Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka.

Central to the meeting were issues that necessitate collaboration among states rather than separate resolutions. Discussions encompassed topics such as inter-state disputes, internal security, economic growth, industrial investment, education, and healthcare. The implementation of Fast Track Special Courts was also highlighted, emphasizing the need to expedite the investigation and resolution of rape cases involving women and children.

The Southern Zonal Council serves as a structured platform for states to address matters that impact more than one state or involve both the Centre and state governments. This council facilitates discussions, allowing leaders and officials to exchange views and seek practical solutions to shared challenges.

The meeting is particularly timely, given that cooperation among southern states is vital for addressing issues ranging from development and investment to security and public services. Karnataka Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar also voiced concerns regarding delimitation and the political representation of southern states during the discussions.

For the participating states, the purpose of the meeting extends beyond merely resolving individual disputes. It aims to establish a stronger channel for ongoing communication and collaboration. Since many areas of governance transcend state boundaries, the discussions in Tamil Nadu are geared toward finding common ground and enhancing coordination on issues that directly impact people across the region.
