Delhi’s Air Quality Improves but Remains in ‘Poor’ Category

Delhi’s Air Quality Sees Marginal Improvement, Risks Persist

For the first time in weeks, Delhi’s air quality index (AQI) has shown signs of improvement. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the city’s 24-hour average AQI dropped to 279 on Saturday morning, moving from the ‘Very Poor’ category to ‘Poor’. This change is attributed to strong winds that helped disperse pollutants and slightly raised the temperature.

Current AQI Statistics
Despite the overall improvement, many areas in Delhi continue to face severe pollution levels. As of 7 AM on November 25, areas like Sonia Vihar (333), Anand Vihar (334), and Wazirpur (330) recorded AQI values in the ‘Very Poor’ category. On average, the AQI across Delhi stood at 279, providing some relief after several days of alarming pollution levels. However, some locations still reported AQI above 350, highlighting persistent health risks.

In comparison, the 24-hour average AQI recorded on November 24 was 318, marking it as one of the cleaner days this month after November 2 (316).

Pollution in NCR Cities
Neighbouring regions in the National Capital Region (NCR) also showed mixed AQI levels:

  • Noida: 202 (Moderate)
  • Ghaziabad: 194 (Moderate)
  • Greater Noida: 200 (Poor)
  • Gurugram: 217 (Poor)

Impact on Health and Visibility
While the improved air quality has brought a temporary respite, residents continue to experience health issues like respiratory discomfort and irritation. In many parts of the city, smog persists, reducing visibility and adding to health concerns.

Outlook for the Day
The CPCB will release the final AQI reading for the day at 4 PM. Experts suggest that the current improvement is fragile, and conditions could worsen without sustained efforts to combat pollution sources like vehicular emissions, construction dust, and stubble burning.

Conclusion
Delhi’s air quality may have improved slightly, but the fight against pollution is far from over. Citizens and authorities need to remain vigilant and proactive in implementing measures to ensure cleaner air for all.
