India, EAEU Likely To Hold Trade Talks In June

India and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) are set to hold the next round of negotiations for a proposed free trade agreement (FTA) in June in Moscow, according to official sources. These discussions are expected to focus on key trade issues, particularly non-trade barriers, as both sides seek to enhance economic cooperation.

The terms of reference for the agreement were signed on August 20, 2025, establishing an 18-month roadmap to facilitate expanded market access for Indian businesses. This proposed pact is particularly important for sectors such as micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), agriculture, and fisheries, which are anticipated to benefit from improved export opportunities. The first round of negotiations took place in India in November 2025.

The EAEU consists of five member countries: Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Among these, Russia remains India’s largest trading partner within the bloc. Bilateral trade between India and Russia reached USD 68.72 billion in the financial year 2024–2025, including exports worth USD 4.88 billion and imports valued at USD 63.84 billion, significantly driven by increased crude oil purchases. Trade with other EAEU member countries also demonstrated steady activity, with Armenia totaling USD 315.18 million, Belarus USD 106.69 million, Kazakhstan USD 349.48 million, and Kyrgyzstan USD 56.78 million.

The proposed agreement is strategically significant as India aims to diversify its export destinations amid ongoing global economic uncertainties.

In a separate development, an official noted that a delegation from Oman is expected to visit India next month to discuss the implementation of the trade agreement signed between the two countries in December of last year. Further developments are anticipated following the upcoming round of negotiations.
