It is set in a post-apocalyptic world in the year 2898 AD and has a budget of ₹600 crore, making it the most expensive Indian film to date. Initially scheduled to be released on May 9, it was postponed due to the Lok Sabha Elections 2024. The new worldwide release date is June 27. The film is set in the mythical and dystopian city of Varanasi and follows a journey from the Mahabharata in 3102 BC to 2898 AD. It centres on Kalki, the 10th avatar of the Hindu God, Vishnu.

The movie has a budget of ₹600 crore, which includes actor fees totalling ₹200 crore, as reported by Pinkvilla. Prabhas is said to have been paid ₹150 crore for his role, while Amitabh Bachchan received ₹18 crore and Kamal Hassan received ₹20 crore. Additionally, Deepika Padukone was paid ₹20 crore for her role in the film.
