Munjya box office collection day 5: Dinesh Vijan’s horror comedy sets Stree 2 up for success, nears Rs 30 crore
After a slow first Monday, Munjya has steadied itself at the box office. According to early estimates by industry tracking website Sacnik, the horror comedy film, directed by Aditya Sarpotdar, earned Rs 4 crore on June 11. Munjya is the latest horror comedy in producer Dinesh Vijan’s shared universe of supernatural films, which includes titles like Stree, Roohi, and Bhediya.
The five-day total of Munjya stands at Rs 27.25 crore. Starring Sharvari Wagh and Mona Singh, Munjya is proving to be a surprise success, considering its lack of major stars and lowkey marketing. It’s also tracking ahead of Janhvi Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao’s Mr & Mrs Mahi, which made Rs 24.45 crore after completing a week in cinemas.
On Tuesday, Munjya observed an overall occupancy of 17.68 percent, with most viewers catching the film’s night shows. In Mumbai, the number of shows has slowly been increasing. On Tuesday, with 779 shows, the occupancy was observed at 22.25 percent. On Monday, there were 756 shows. In Delhi and NCR, an extra 25 shows were added on Tuesday, with occupancy standing at 16.50 percent.
Munjya defied mixed reviews to emerge as a sleeper hit, in a year that has given multiple under-performers in the Hindi industry. Shubhra Gupta gave the film a two-star rating and wrote, “Sadly, Munjya is neither funny-haha, nor does it make you want to look under your seat, despite its liberal use of jump-scares, and a CGI ghoul.”
About the incredible box office run of Munjya, an elated Sharvari said in a statement, “Munjya is off to a flyer at the box office and I have to admit that I’m over the moon right now. To have a big success under my belt is, of course, a huge confidence booster for me. My social media is flooded with love from across the country. That too is a huge validation for my work.” The horror comedy universe will continue with Stree 2 in a few weeks.
