PM Modi Inaugurates World’s Highest Railway Arch Bridge in J&K

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Chenab Rail Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the launch of the world’s highest railway arch bridge. This engineering feat is expected to revolutionize connectivity in the region.

Rising boldly across the Chenab River, the bridge stands at a height of 359 meters above the riverbed—taller than the Eiffel Tower. Constructed using weathering steel for durability in extreme weather, the bridge is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.

“This bridge is not just infrastructure—it is a symbol of the determination and skill of Indian engineers and workers,” PM Modi said.

The Chenab Bridge will significantly improve regional connectivity, facilitating faster movement of goods and passengers. Experts predict a boost in trade, commerce, and tourism, contributing to Jammu and Kashmir’s socio-economic development.

The bridge’s construction took over 18 years, involving 28,000 tonnes of steel and over 1,300 workers at its peak. Despite challenges such as difficult terrain, extreme winds, and seismic activity, engineers achieved what was once considered impossible.

The inauguration aligns with India’s broader push to modernize infrastructure and integrate the Kashmir Valley with the rest of the country. The bridge is expected to reduce travel time and increase safety and efficiency in rail travel.

Locals have welcomed the bridge as a “lifeline,” and railway officials anticipate it becoming a major tourist attraction.
