“Raccoon ‘Zombie’ Virus Sparks Concern Across Canada: What You Need to Know”
Reported by Pushpa
“Attention, wildlife enthusiasts! A peculiar virus is stirring up a storm among raccoons across Canada. If you come across a raccoon behaving oddly, it might be afflicted with the canine distemper virus (CDV), turning it into what some describe as a ‘zombie raccoon.‘
CDV causes raccoons to act strangely, like approaching humans fearlessly, standing on their hind legs, baring teeth, or even growling. These infected raccoons might also stumble around during daylight hours, appearing disoriented, like they’ve had a bit too much to drink. Sadly, CDV is fatal for raccoons and can make them aggressive if they feel cornered.
What should you do if you encounter one of these unusual raccoons?
Don’t attempt to approach or relocate them yourself, as this could spread the virus to other animals. Instead, reach out to local authorities, like the humane society, for assistance.
Nathalie Karvonen, from the Toronto Wildlife Centre, explains that CDV has been a concern in Toronto for 15-20 years, initially transmitted by pets. Although pets are usually vaccinated against it, there’s no vaccination campaign for raccoons since humans aren’t at risk.
The surge in sick and injured raccoons has prompted an increase in service calls to organizations like Toronto Animal Services. With warmer weather, more raccoons are out and about, increasing the virus’s spread through contact.
In addition to the health risks, CDV could also lead to more raccoons being hit by cars. Consequently, Toronto Animal Services has seen a rise in requests for cadaver pickups.
While CDV symptoms resemble rabies, Ontario has successfully reduced rabies cases among raccoons by 90% through annual vaccination campaigns. However, if you’re scratched by a raccoon, seek medical attention promptly, as you may require a rabies shot.
Lastly, experts strongly advise against trying to domesticate raccoons. Although rare, instances of raccoons attacking humans have occurred, especially if they’re accustomed to receiving food from people. Plus, raccoons are surprisingly dexterous and can open doors with their sharp claws.
So, if you encounter a raccoon behaving strangely, remember: observe from a safe distance and leave the intervention to the professionals.”
