Taj Mahal Crowned the Most Beautiful Building in the World

The iconic Taj Mahal in Agra has once again made India proud by securing the top position on Time Out’s latest list of the 24 most beautiful buildings in the world. Revered for its architectural elegance and deep historical significance, the Taj Mahal stands as a timeless symbol of love and craftsmanship.

Commissioned in the 1600s by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, the Taj Mahal was built in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, who passed away during childbirth. Heartbroken, the emperor envisioned a monument that would reflect the purity and eternal nature of his love. What resulted was a white-marble mausoleum so stunning, it continues to attract millions of visitors every year.

The construction of the Taj Mahal took around 22 years, with over 20,000 artisans, architects, and laborers from across India and beyond contributing to its creation. The marble used was sourced from Makrana in Rajasthan, known for its durability and luminous white finish. Intricate floral patterns and Quranic inscriptions were carefully inlaid using semi-precious stones like jade, turquoise, lapis lazuli, and onyx — a testament to the unmatched craftsmanship of the Mughal era.

Architecturally, the monument is a marvel. Its perfect symmetry, grand central dome, four towering minarets, and the long reflective pool running through the landscaped gardens all come together in harmonious balance. The complex also includes a mosque, a guest house, and expansive Mughal-style gardens, enhancing the monument’s serene aura.

India, home to several iconic landmarks such as the Qutub Minar, Gateway of India, Konark Sun Temple, Charminar, and Victoria Memorial, boasts a rich architectural heritage. Yet, it is the Taj Mahal that continues to be the crowning jewel — not just nationally, but now globally.

According to Time Out, the Taj Mahal’s ability to blend beauty, emotion, and technical precision makes it stand apart. It’s also one of the Seven Wonders of the World and has been featured in countless movies, books, and travel documentaries. Even after nearly 400 years, it retains a fresh, awe-inspiring charm.

Other stunning buildings featured in Time Out’s top 10 include Hallgrímskirkja (Iceland), Pyramids of Giza (Egypt), Fallingwater (USA), Ad-Dayr in Petra (Jordan), and the Fondation Louis Vuitton (France), among others.

The Taj Mahal’s latest recognition once again reaffirms its place as a timeless treasure of India and the world.
