Faster UPI Transactions from June 16, Key Changes for PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm Users
UPI users across India will enjoy a faster and more efficient experience starting today, June 16. Digital transactions on popular platforms such as PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm will see significant speed improvements based on new guidelines issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
In a circular dated April 26, 2025, the NPCI announced an initiative aimed at enhancing UPI performance and user experience. This initiative focuses on reducing delays and improving the speed of money transfers, balance checks, and autopay mandates.
According to the NPCI, these upgrades will benefit remitter banks, beneficiary banks, and payment service providers (PSPs). The circular emphasized that member banks and PSPs must respond within the revised time limits and make any necessary configuration updates.
Key Highlights:
1. Faster Transactions:
Money transfers on UPI platforms will now be processed with reduced delays, ensuring a quicker experience for users.
2. Balance Check Limit:
Users can check their bank balance up to 50 times per day via UPI apps. This limit has been introduced to prevent system overload.
3. Account Listing Requests:
Each user will be allowed up to 25 account listing requests per day per app, which facilitates better control and performance tracking.
4. Autopay Mandate Execution:
Only one attempt and up to three retries will be allowed for each autopay mandate. These will be processed outside peak hours (10:00 AM–1:00 PM and 5:00 PM–9:30 PM) to reduce congestion.
Looking ahead, a circular dated May 21, 2025, introduces further changes starting in August, directing PSPs and acquiring banks to monitor UPI API usage, particularly focusing on customer-initiated requests for smoother operations.
This upgrade is a significant step toward making India’s digital payment system not just faster but also smarter and more efficient for its growing user base.
