Dwarka Expressway Toll to Begin Next Week; New Rates and Pass Rules Announced

Commuters in Delhi and Gurugram using the Dwarka Expressway will soon have to pay toll charges, as free travel on the route ends next week. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has confirmed that toll collection will begin at the Bijwasan Plaza on the Dwarka Expressway. This marks the start of a new tolling system that will work together with the existing Kherki Daula plaza on the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway.

According to the new rates, a one-way toll for cars will cost around Rs 220, while a return journey will cost around Rs 330. These prices apply to vehicles that do not have a local monthly pass or a FASTag annual pass.

Integrated Tolling System

NHAI has introduced an integrated system to ensure commuters do not pay double tolls. If a vehicle crosses the Bijwasan Plaza first, the toll is paid there, and the commuter will not be charged again at Kherki Daula in the same direction.
However, if a vehicle passes Kherki Daula first, the driver must pay there and then pay the remaining balance at Bijwasan Plaza.

This system has been implemented to avoid double-charging for the same stretch of road.

Pass Options

Two types of passes are available for regular users:

1. Monthly Local Pass:
This pass is available only for residents living within 20 km of the toll plaza. People will need to show their local address proof every month to renew this pass.

2. FASTag Annual Pass:
This pass can be purchased and renewed online. It works across all national highway toll plazas and is useful for long-distance or frequent travellers.

Impact on Commuters

For people who travel daily using their own vehicle and have a pass, the new toll system will not cause major changes. However, cab, taxi, and aggregator rides are expected to become more expensive, as drivers will add the toll cost to passenger fares.

Why the Toll Is High

The Dwarka Expressway has been built with several elevated structures—flyovers, underpasses, and tunnels. Around 22 km of the 30-km expressway is elevated. Because of this, toll calculations use a formula that counts these elevated structures as a longer road stretch of about 150 km. This is done to recover the high construction cost.

Update on Kherki Daula Plaza

The toll cost for cars at Kherki Daula has also increased from Rs 80 to Rs 95. This change includes charges for new flyovers and infrastructure along the Delhi–Gurgaon Expressway.

With toll collection beginning soon, both Delhi and Gurugram commuters are advised to prepare for new travel charges and updated traffic movement rules on both expressways.
