IMD Issues Red Alert as Heavy Rain Disrupts Mumbai and Nearby Districts

Mumbai faced a challenging day on Monday, July 6, 2026, as relentless monsoon rains continued to pour over the city and its surrounding districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, warning residents of exceptionally heavy rainfall, strong winds, and the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

The continuous downpour has significantly disrupted daily life. Many roads across the city were waterlogged, leading to extensive traffic jams and slow-moving vehicles during the morning rush hour. Railway services were also affected, with long-distance trains to Pune suspended and suburban train operations in a section of Raigad temporarily halted. Commuters experienced delays as authorities worked to restore normal transport services while prioritizing passenger safety.

To ensure the safety of students and staff amid the severe weather, the Maharashtra government declared a holiday for all government, private, and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Palghar.

The weather situation turned tragic when a three-story chawl collapsed in Mumbai’s Mankhurd area on Sunday night, reportedly due to the relentless rain. Officials confirmed that six people lost their lives, while another individual sustained injuries. Rescue teams arrived promptly and conducted search operations despite the challenging weather conditions.

The IMD has indicated that more spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely in the coming hours, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors whenever possible. Authorities have advised those living in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, follow official weather updates, and heed emergency instructions.

Each monsoon reminds Mumbai of its resilience but also underscores the need for improved urban infrastructure and disaster preparedness. As rescue teams, civic authorities, and emergency services work tirelessly, citizens remain hopeful for the rain to ease soon while staying cautious and supporting one another during this difficult weather period.
