Mirabai Chanu Wins Third Straight Commonwealth Games Gold as India Adds Two More Weightlifting Medals

Mirabai Chanu once again proved why she remains one of India’s greatest sporting icons, winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal on Day 3 of the Glasgow 2026 Games. The Olympic medallist topped the women’s 48kg weightlifting event, extending her remarkable dominance and giving India another golden moment on the international stage.

The third day of competition turned out to be one of India’s strongest performances so far, with the weightlifting team leading the medal charge. Alongside Chanu’s historic victory, Rishikanta Singh secured a silver medal in the men’s 60kg category, while Mathupandi Raja added another silver in the men’s 65kg event.

Mathupandi Raja impressed throughout the competition with a combined lift of 286kg, recording 126kg in the snatch and 160kg in the clean and jerk. Although Malaysia’s Aznil Bin Bidin Muhamad claimed gold with a Games record lift, Raja’s consistent performance ensured India finished the day with three medals in weightlifting.

Beyond the weightlifting arena, India’s boxing contingent also had reasons to celebrate. Preeti Pawar and Jadumani Singh advanced to the quarter-finals in their respective categories after confident performances, keeping India’s hopes alive for more medals in the coming days.

In swimming, the Indian quartet of Srihari Nataraj, Aryan Nehra, Aneesh Gowda, and Dhakshan Shashikumar qualified for the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay final. The team eventually finished sixth, delivering a competitive performance against some of the strongest swimming nations in the Commonwealth.

Meanwhile, India’s campaign in lawn bowls came to an end in two events as Putul Sonowal missed out on a semi-final spot in the men’s singles, while the women’s pairs team of Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey concluded their journey in Glasgow.

With athletics set to begin and several medal events scheduled for Day 4, India’s contingent will look to carry this momentum forward. Mirabai Chanu’s historic golden hat-trick has already become one of the standout moments of the Games, inspiring both her teammates and millions of sports fans back home.
