Rekha Gupta Meets Satya Niketan Collapse Victims at AIIMS
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the AIIMS Trauma Centre on Tuesday to meet with victims and family members affected by the Satya Niketan PG building collapse, which claimed seven lives on September 6. This visit occurred as the city continued to cope with the aftermath of the tragedy and ongoing concerns about building safety and construction practices.
During her visit, Gupta met both injured victims and their families, assuring them that the Delhi government would provide the best possible medical treatment along with financial assistance. The Chief Minister stated that 12 people were rescued from the collapsed building in injured condition, while seven were later found deceased. Among those who lost their lives were two laborers.
One laborer who was injured in the collapse is currently receiving treatment at AIIMS and is reportedly doing well, despite suffering a serious leg injury. Gupta also provided updates on the condition of the children admitted to the hospital: two children were stable and expected to be discharged on Tuesday, while another child remained in the ICU in more serious condition.
The Chief Minister mentioned that she had met with the parents of the injured children and assured them of ongoing government support. Families of the deceased children have already taken the bodies and left Delhi, but the government remains in contact with them and has made the necessary arrangements for their support.
In addition to medical and financial assistance, building safety has emerged as a major concern following the incident. Gupta reported that a building next to the collapsed structure has been declared unsafe and is scheduled for demolition soon.
Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) regarding the September 6 collapse. The investigation is examining allegations that additional floors were constructed on the old structure despite concerns about its load-bearing capacity. Police have also indicated that renovation work was underway in the basement before the building collapsed.
Three individuals—Hariram, his wife Urmila, and their son Mahesh—have been arrested in connection with the case. Police are investigating the construction and renovation activities that may have contributed to the collapse.
In response to this incident, the Delhi government has ordered intensified safety inspections of PG accommodations and coaching centers across the city. This initiative aims to identify unsafe buildings and prevent future tragedies of this nature.
