Ahmedabad Hosts First-Ever World Yogasana Sports Championship

Ahmedabad is hosting the inaugural World Yogasana Sports Championship 2026, marking a significant milestone in the global promotion of Yogasana as a competitive sport. This five-day international championship began today in Gujarat and has attracted over 500 athletes from more than 70 countries.

Participants from nations such as the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Oman, Mauritius, Uganda, Zambia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Kenya are joining this grand sporting event. Yogasana Bharat is organizing the championship in collaboration with the World Yogasana body and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to join the opening ceremony virtually at around 6:40 PM today. In a social media message, the Prime Minister stated that yoga is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide and described the championship as a notable milestone for Yogasana on the global sporting stage. He also extended his best wishes to the organizers and participants.

The event features multiple disciplines and competitions across various age groups, including sub-junior, junior, and senior categories for both male and female athletes. Competitions include traditional Yogasana, artistic single, artistic pair, artistic group, and rhythmic pair performances.

In addition, athletes will compete in discipline-specific categories, such as forward bend, back bend, twisting body, hand balance, leg balance, and supine events. The championship aims to showcase Yogasana not only as a fitness practice but also as a recognized international sport that requires flexibility, balance, strength, and discipline.

The event is expected to strengthen India’s role in promoting yoga globally while encouraging young athletes to explore Yogasana as a professional sporting discipline. With participation from countries around the world, the championship highlights the increasing international appeal of yoga and India’s leadership in spreading its cultural and sporting significance.
