Amit Shah Visits Poonch to Meet Shelling Victims’ Families, Reviews Security in J&K

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Jammu on Thursday evening for a high-stakes visit to the Union Territory, marking his first trip since the launch of Operation Sindoor. On Friday, May 30, Shah traveled to Poonch district to meet the families who lost loved ones in Pakistani shelling and drone attacks earlier this month. Poonch recorded the highest number of civilian casualties—14 out of the total 28 deaths—between May 7 and 10, making this a crucial stop in the Minister’s outreach mission.

Shah’s visit aimed at extending both condolences and assurance. He personally interacted with the bereaved families and offered support from the central government, reiterating that national security and citizen welfare remain top priorities. Alongside the humanitarian gesture, Shah also visited religious places and addressed the Border Security Force (BSF) personnel stationed in the border area, praising their relentless contribution during Operation Sindoor.

“The Union Home Minister’s presence in Poonch at this critical time signals the Centre’s serious commitment to protecting citizens living in vulnerable border regions,” said BJP leader Vikram Randhawa. “This visit also sends a clear message to Pakistan about India’s firm stance on cross-border aggression.”

Later in the evening on Thursday, Shah chaired a high-level security meeting in Jammu to assess the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir and finalize arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra. The annual pilgrimage, which attracts lakhs of devotees each year, is scheduled to begin on July 3 and will conclude on August 9.

During the review, Shah emphasized maintaining the “highest level of vigilance” and instructed the forces to ensure that all arrangements are in place for a smooth and safe yatra experience. “The government will leave no stone unturned to provide all required facilities to the Amarnath pilgrims,” he said.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Shah added, “Chaired a review meeting for the Amarnath Pilgrimage and evaluated the security arrangements and preparedness meant for the pilgrims. Instructed to maintain utmost vigilance and ensure seamless completion of the sacred journey.”

The Minister’s visit underscores the government’s dual focus—ensuring internal security while upholding spiritual traditions. As tensions with Pakistan remain, the Centre appears resolute in safeguarding border areas while delivering administrative efficiency for high-footfall events like the Amarnath Yatra.

Shah’s engagements in Jammu and Poonch not only provided comfort to grieving families but also reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to a secure and resilient Jammu and Kashmir.
