India Launches Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2025 to Reinforce Rural Sanitation Mission

New Delhi, May 30, 2025: In a major push to boost rural sanitation, Union Minister of Jal Shakti Shri C.R. Patil launched Swachh Survekshan Grameen (SSG) 2025, India’s largest rural cleanliness survey, in New Delhi today. The survey will assess sanitation progress in 21,000 villages across 761 districts in 34 States and Union Territories.

Launched in the presence of Minister of State Shri V. Somanna and other senior officials, SSG 2025 is a flagship initiative under Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G) Phase II, focused on evaluating the sustained outcomes of the ODF Plus Model.

Union Minister Patil emphasized that “Swachhata is not a one-time goal but a continuous journey,” urging collective efforts toward a Viksit Bharat through community-led sanitation.

SSG 2025 will use a structured, technology-driven framework to evaluate States and Districts on four components: service-level progress, direct observation of sanitation status, infrastructure functionality, and citizen feedback. The assessment will include field visits to villages, schools, public spaces, and sanitation units such as Plastic Waste Management Units (PWMUs), Faecal Sludge Management (FSM) plants, and GOBARdhan units.

The Ministry has introduced geo-fencing and a mobile app to ensure data transparency and encourage citizen participation.

The event also featured the release of the official Assessment Framework and Swachhata Chronicles Volume III, a compendium of state best practices.

Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2025 is expected to catalyze stronger grassroots participation, innovative approaches, and sustained sanitation models as India moves closer to its dream of a clean and healthy rural landscape.
