At the COP28 World Climate Action Summit, PM Modi suggests to host COP33 in 2028.
During the inauguration of the high-level COP28 World Climate Action Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed hosting the COP33 Summit in India in 2028 and committed to a 45% reduction in emissions intensity by 2030. He announced plans to increase the share of non-fossil fuels to 50%, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2070. Emphasizing the need for decisiveness, balance, ambition, and innovation, he urged unity in working towards climate goals. The Prime Minister introduced the Green Credit initiative, aiming to create ‘carbon sinks’ through global economic participation, expressing gratitude for world leaders’ support on climate justice, finance, and green credit. India, with 17% of the global population, contributes less than 4% to global carbon emissions, showcasing a balanced approach to ecology and the economy. PM Modi highlighted India’s progress towards meeting its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and called for technology transfer from rich nations to aid developing countries in combating climate change. He warned of the urgent need to rectify environmental mistakes, emphasizing India’s G20 efforts for sustainable development and a commitment to tripling global renewable resources.
