Reported by Gungun

The third phase of India’s 2024 elections kicked off today, marking another significant step in the democratic process. Spanning across 11 states and Union Territories, 93 constituencies are up for grabs, sparking anticipation and enthusiasm among voters.

Among the notable contenders in this phase are heavyweight politicians like Union Home Minister Amit Shah, vying for a second term from Gujarat’s Gandhinagar, and union ministers Jyotiraditya Scindia, Mansukh Mandaviya, and Pralhad Joshi.

One of the highlights of this phase is the battleground in Maharashtra’s Baramati, where the fate of NCP founder Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule hangs in the balance as she faces off against Sunetra Pawar, wife of Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

The electoral landscape also sees the prominence of the late Mulayam Singh Yadav’s family, with three members contesting, including Akhilesh Yadav’s wife Dimple Yadav and Akshay Yadav, son of senior Samajwadi Party leader Ram Gopal Yadav, vying for the Firozabad Lok Sabha seat.

With a total of 1351 candidates in the fray, including 17.24 crore eligible voters, including 8.39 crore females, the diversity and scale of this phase underscore the vibrancy of Indian democracy.

States and Union Territories participating in this phase include Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

Amidst the electoral fervor, the BJP has already secured the Surat seat unopposed, adding to the anticipation surrounding the remaining contests.

As the nation progresses through the phases, the excitement builds towards the ultimate culmination on June 4, when the counting of votes for all 543 seats will take place, shaping the future of the world’s largest democracy.
