Faculty of Agricultural Sciences organized a seminar on “Foundation and Certified Seed Production in Paddy Hybrids”

Faculty of Agricultural Sciences organized a seminar on occasion of “International Seed Day” on topic “Foundation and Certified Seed Production in Paddy Hybrids” by eminent Key speaker Prof. P. K. Singh, Dept. of Genetics and Plant Breeding, Nodal Seed Officer, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. The theme for 2022 is “Its Time to Conserve, Protect & Revive Indigenous Seeds”. There were 91 participants from different sections like Undergraduates, Post graduates, PhD scholars and Faculty members. There were 91 participants from a variety of groups, including faculty members, postgraduate students, undergraduates, and PhD scholars. The brief Introduction about renound and esteemed speaker was presented by Dr. Khushboo Chandra.
Prof. P. K. Singh discussed about current area, production and productivity of Rice crop despite of having more area in India Production and Productivity is less as compare to China. The farmer’s reuse of seeds is prohibited so to oppose this concept every year we started celebrating International Seed Day. Earlier people also used to exchange seed materials instead of purchasing it from market. Sir also discussed about the time line of adoption of hybrid rice in Indian scenario. The process and production techniques of Hybrid rice, Maintenance of A, B, R line and multiplication and restoration of male sterile lines. India is best suited for cultivation of each and every crop due to diversified agro climatic zones and soil properties. In India private seed companies were more flourishing as compared to public seed sector. Yuan Longping is the first scientist who successfully altered the self-pollinating characteristic of rice and realized large-scale farming of hybrid rice. This earned him the title “Father of Hybrid Rice”.Sir also discussed about the several hybrids and varieties suitable for Submergence tolerance Ajay (CRHR 7) and Cold and multiple stress tolerant Rajalaxmi (CRHR 5).The indica/japonica crosses show maximum heterosis. CMS has been induced in rice through gamma irradiation of IR62829B a maintainer of WA cytoplasm (IRRI 1995).Dr. Singh discussed about special operation for synchronization in production of hybrid rice like seed interval, supplementary pollination. Roughing and Isolation distance are two prerequisite in hybrid seed Production. Then he concluded session by discussing constraints in varietal and hybrid seed production, lack of promotion of public seed companies as well as production technology.
Several queries of participants were satisfied by speaker and Vote of thanks was given by Dr. Heena.
