Google Launches AI Mode in India via Search Labs

New Delhi, June 25, 2025 — Google has officially launched its AI Mode for search in India, providing users with early access to its experimental conversational search tool through Search Labs. This tool allows users to receive Q&A-style responses to complex queries in a more interactive format.

Users in India, once opted in via Search Labs, can now conduct searches in English; however, Google has not yet announced when support for regional languages will be made available.

With AI Mode, users can enter detailed questions such as: “My kids are 4 and 7 and have lots of energy. Can you suggest creative ways to get them active and moving indoors, especially on hot days, without needing a lot of space or expensive toys?” They can also refine their questions, leading to more accurate and contextual results.

This AI Mode in India supports both voice and image-based searches, features that Google considers essential in a market where voice search is widely used. The tool is powered by a custom version of Google’s Gemini 2.5 AI model, and early testing indicates that users often ask queries that are two to three times longer than traditional searches.

With over 870 million internet users, India represents a significant market for Google and frequently serves as a testing ground for new products, particularly in multilingual and mobile-first environments.

The launch also reflects Google’s efforts to maintain its dominance in search, as users increasingly turn to chat-based AI tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity. Google initially tested this feature with premium users in the U.S. and rolled it out widely after its Google I/O event. Since then, it has incorporated shopping options, advertisements, and support for media-rich inputs, such as voice and images.
