Hotel and Tourism Management Dept of SGT University holds 5-day Faculty Development Programme

The Faculty of Hotel and Tourism Management, SGT University organized a 5-day online FDP from Feb 1 to Feb 5 on Emerging Trends in Hospitality And Tourism Research and Data Analysis

The first day began with an introduction to Dean FHTM, VC, and PVC, and the keynote speaker Prof Sitikantha Mishra , former Director IITTM Govt. of India who is an Alumnus of IIM Ahmedabad and Ph.D. in Business Administration from Utkal University. He stressed the importance of Research and suggested hospitality should employ field experiments. He also said Tourism is cultural and economic activity. He enlightened the participants, scholars, and Faculty with Sanskrit shlokas related to research work.

The session continued with a discussion on the topic, Introduction to Research &; Planning Research in Hospitality Sector by   Prof. Sapan Sadual  who is  from the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Shiksha O Anusandhan, Deemed to be

University, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. An Associate Professor working in the School of hotel management, Sikhsha O  Anusandhan University. He has been awarded his PhD degree from Utkal University Odisha. Dr.Sadual explained the types of Data used in research as well as the types of research, research process, and research methodology. He enlightened the participants with the importance of the research process.

Maya Dhall was a part of the 2nd session who is cluster L&D Ibis hotel. She discussed the topic Latest Trends In Hospitality & Tourism Research Areas, Post Covid-19. Ms. Maya enlightened all the participants with current trends in hospitality, how contactless check-in and check-out are prevailing now in new normal after covid. She explained the concept of staycation, virtual cooking sessions organised by hotels etc.

The first day of FDP was a success with nearly 70 to 80 participants who joined from all over India , students of SGT University, along with their Faculties as well as Dean FHTM participated with full fervour and zeal

On the 2nd day online FDP Subrat Das CEO, Pipuls Group of Hotel & Resorts was the speaker. The title of the session was  Use of Technology in Hospitality & Tourism, towards sustainable development.

The First session started with interesting facts by the speaker like the latest technologies used in Hotel Industry and how technology has advanced and the Internet of things and Property management systems is the need of the hour Dash also emphasized that due to the new normal, bookings in hotels and check in check out etc. all are done by the latest technology and less need of physical employees. Dean FHTM also addressed the participants and scholars from various Universities. Nearly 100 participants were there who took part in the online FDP

Emerging Trends in Hospitality Research and way forward was taken up by Swaroop Sinha Director, ITC Hotels Ltd in the 2nd session. He engaged the audience with inspiring quotes and relevant examples related to our everyday lives as well as stressed the need for teachers of Hotel Management Colleges to go for on-the-job training and equip themselves with updated technology and enhance their skills. Like students , teachers should also be sent for training. He also said Emotional Quotient is equally important as Intelligent Quotient in jobs and hotel Industries.

The third day of FDP at FHTM started with an interesting morning session by Dr. Padmalita Routray Director and HOD from Fakir Mohan University, Baleshwar who briefed the participants on Finding Research Gap and Filtering for identifying Research Objective and Hypothesis. She stressed participants, research scholars use helicopter view, funnel approaches to find the research gap. She also briefed about types of approaches types of gaps and also discussed  about types of hypothesis.

The afternoon session was taken by Leena P.Singh ,Asst Professor ,Ravenshaw University ,Cuttack who briefed the scholars and participants ,Data Sources and Data Collection Methods.

She stressed on types of Data to be used in Research, Data collection strategies,about quantitative and qualitative data, and also elaborated on online tools for collecting data.

Nearly 100 participants attended the session from various Universities.

The 4th day of FDP on Feb 4 started with an interesting morning session by Dr.Pragyan Paramita Sarangi Associate Professor from Strusti Academy of Management who spoke on the topic Qualitative Research Methods and Domain Research Proposal Presentation .Dr.Sarangi emphasized qualitative and quantitative methods used in research. She also explained types of interviews needed to be used for samples as well as Literature review writing and synopsis writing

The afternoon session was taken by Prof.Dr Soumendra Kumar Patra from Ravenshaw University Cuttack who spoke on the topic research Design and Sampling Methods /Determination of Sample Size and SPSS. He discussed  Research Design, Sampling techniques, sample size, and statistics and its types.

Both the sessions were very illuminating.

On the final day, Rishabh Tandon, Area Director, Intercontinental Hotel Group spoke on the topic Future of work 2022, how the hospitality industry needs to prepare to win the talent war.

Mr. Tandon is the Area Director – Human Resources with Intercontinental Hotels Group. He passionately drives People Strategy for 12 IHG hotels in India.

He emphasized 7 trends dominating the world of work in 2022, i.e. reinvention, scarcity, vitality, sustainability, individuality, inclusivity, and accountability, barriers faced by emerging leaders, and insights from young leaders. He also said that burnout is real and existing and we have to be burn bright which means affirming, focussed, and energetic.

Accor Group spoke in the afternoon session on the

  topic Emerging Trends in Hospitality Sector post covid -19. He is a Seasoned Human Resource Leader with 20 years track record of successful accomplishments in managing all phases of human resource management, HR operations, and performance management for the Hospitality Industry

He enlightened the participants by updating how the touchless system has come into existence in almost all the hotels. How staycations have come into existence and how hotels are following strict covid norms in all the departments.

Both the sessions were very engrossing and informative. The session was followed by Valedictory Function. The chief guest of the session was Dr. Susanta Kundu, Director Faculty Of practices at SGT University who appreciated the 5-day FDP and congratulated Team FHTM for the successful completion of 5 days FDP on Emerging Trends In Hospitality and Tourism Research And Data Analysis. The FHTM department received lots of appreciation and positive feedback on the online FDP conducted, and SGT University, FHTM dept.  looks forward to more such FDP sessions offline as well as the online mode in near future.

It is rightly said “every teacher needs to improve, not because they are not good enough, but because they can be even better “
