Amar Singh Chamkila’s Life Story Unveiled in Imtiaz Ali’s Latest Film

The recent Netflix release, “Amar Singh Chamkila,” directed by Imtiaz Ali, has captivated audiences with its portrayal of the legendary Punjabi singer’s life. The film sheds light on the tragic journey of Chamkila, who was tragically shot by masked assailants, along with his second wife, Amarjot.
In a heartfelt interview with Love Punjab on their YouTube channel, Gurmail Kaur, Chamkila’s first wife, bravely shared the struggles she faced after his untimely demise. She recounted how Chamkila was not only the light of their lives but also the sole provider for their family. Gurmail revealed the hardships endured as the court battles over Chamkila’s earnings spanned 15 long years. Despite the challenges, they eventually emerged victorious, thanks to the testimony of their village witnesses affirming Gurmail’s rightful claim as his wife.
Gurmail recalled hosting Chamkila and Amarjot with warmth and hospitality, highlighting their amicable relationship. However, tragedy struck after Chamkila’s passing when Amarjot’s family claimed everything, leaving Gurmail and her children destitute. Despite the injustice, Gurmail persevered, shouldering the responsibility of raising her children and ensuring her daughters received an education.
The film, “Amar Singh Chamkila,” portrayed by Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra, delves into the real-life story of the iconic singer and his tragic end. Released on April 12, the movie offers a poignant reflection on the life and legacy of Chamkila and his enduring impact on Punjabi music.
