North India Scorches in Heatwave While South Braces for Heavy Rain: IMD Forecast

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe weather warning across the country, with northern India continuing to experience severe heatwave conditions while the southern region prepares for intense rainfall.

Over the past few days, the national capital region and other northern states have been battling extreme heat, with temperatures touching a scorching 45°C in many areas. On Monday, Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory recorded 43.3°C, while Palam reached 44.3°C, Lodi Road 43.3°C, Ridge 44.9°C, and Ayanagar topped at a blazing 45.3°C.

The IMD confirmed that these heatwave conditions are likely to persist in isolated locations of Delhi through Tuesday and possibly Wednesday, with mainly clear skies. However, there is hope on the horizon—beginning Thursday, the forecast indicates light rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds that may make the weather hot but more humid. Relief from heatwave conditions is expected from Thursday through Sunday, June 15.

When Will It Rain in Delhi-NCR?

According to IMD predictions, the southwest monsoon is expected to begin its onset in north India from June 20. Rainfall in Delhi-NCR is likely between June 25 and 30, offering much-needed relief from the sweltering heat. The monsoon has already progressed in southern and western India, as well as northeastern states.

Heatwave Grips North India

Apart from Delhi, neighboring states are also reeling under oppressive conditions. In Haryana, Sirsa recorded 46.4°C, while Chandigarh experienced its hottest day of the season at 43.8°C. Rohtak saw temperatures rising to 45.6°C, and Hisar hit 44°C.

Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar was among the hottest places in the country, registering 47.3°C. The regional weather department has warned that such extreme heat will likely continue for the next few days.

Weather Update for Other States

Heatwave conditions are expected in parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh on Tuesday. Meanwhile, hot and humid weather is likely in Bihar, coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Gangetic West Bengal.

The IMD also forecasts heavy rainfall across multiple regions, including Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Kerala, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Tripura. Southern and northeastern states are expected to continue receiving consistent monsoon showers throughout the week.

As India faces this stark contrast between blazing heat in the north and monsoon showers in the south, the IMD continues to monitor the rapidly evolving weather conditions, urging residents to take necessary precautions.
