India To See Heatwave And Heavy Rain Split

India is set to experience a stark weather divide over the next seven days, with some regions facing intense heatwaves while others brace for heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

This changing weather pattern is attributed to a western disturbance, which is expected to bring rain and gusty winds to northwestern India starting April 28. This system may result in isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall, providing partial relief from the extreme temperatures currently affecting many areas.

At present, several states—including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana—are experiencing severe heatwaves. Temperatures in many locations are exceeding 44°C, with Banda in Uttar Pradesh recording highs of up to 46.6°C. The national capital, New Delhi, continues to experience above-normal temperatures, accompanied by official heatwave warnings.

The heatwave is not confined to northern India. States such as Odisha, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala are also seeing high temperatures, with coastal regions facing humid conditions. Even hilly states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are reporting unusually high temperatures, disrupting daily life and prompting precautionary measures, such as school closures in some areas.

This ongoing heat has driven India’s power demand to record levels, reaching 256.11 GW, as the need for cooling increases in households and commercial spaces.

While the anticipated rainfall is expected to bring some respite, the relief will likely be uneven. Some areas may experience a rapid drop in temperatures, while others could continue to experience persistent heat.

The IMD has advised citizens to take precautions, avoid direct sun exposure during peak hours, and stay hydrated. As the country navigates through this phase of extreme and contrasting weather conditions, the coming days will be crucial in determining the overall shift in temperatures.
