India Crowned Champions: Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 Final Highlights

India triumphed over China in the final of the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 in Rajgir, maintaining their unbeaten streak with 7 wins in 7 matches. Deepika emerged as the match-winner, ensuring India retained the prestigious title.

A Glorious Journey to the Title

India’s journey to the final was marked by a dominant performance, particularly in their semifinal clash against Japan. Despite relentless attacks, it took 48 minutes for India to breach Japan’s defenses, thanks to Navneet Kaur (48’) and Lalremsiami (56’). Japanese goalkeeper Yu Kudo proved to be a formidable opponent, saving numerous attempts with exceptional agility and earning the Player of the Match title.

India dominated the match statistics, with 23 circle entries and 13 penalty corners, compared to Japan’s 6 entries and a lone penalty corner. However, the team’s inability to capitalize on early opportunities raised concerns, as head coach Harendra Singh emphasized the need for better finishing in high-pressure matches.

The Final Showdown: India vs China

The final was another intense battle, where Deepika turned frustration into triumph. The forward from Haryana, who had struggled against Japan’s defense, delivered when it mattered most. Her smart play in the circle won India a penalty stroke, which vice-captain Navneet Kaur converted, giving India a crucial lead.

India’s second goal showcased the brilliance of Sunelita Toppo, a 17-year-old rising star. Driving down the right flank, she delivered a perfectly timed assist to an unmarked Lalremsiami, who sealed the win with a clean sweep past China’s goalkeeper.

Harendra Singh’s Vision

Speaking about the team’s performance, coach Harendra Singh, who hails from Bihar, said, “Being in Buddha’s land, I told the team to channel calmness in the circle. The search for such composure is ongoing, but we are improving with every match.” He praised Sunelita’s contribution, calling her “a very exciting talent” and a bright prospect for India’s future.

A Step Towards Greatness

With this victory, India not only retained their title but also demonstrated their growing dominance in Asian women’s hockey. The team’s blend of youth and experience, along with Harendra Singh’s tactical acumen, promises a brighter future for Indian hockey.
