Mark Carney’s Liberals Secure Victory in High-Stakes Canada Election Shaped by Trump Factor

Ottawa, April 29 — In a stunning political turnaround, Prime Minister Mark Carney has led Canada’s Liberal Party to victory in a national election that was as much about domestic issues as it was about external threats—chiefly from U.S. President Donald Trump.

With all votes now cast, public broadcaster CBC’s poll aggregator reported the Liberals holding a national support of 42.8%, ahead of the Conservatives at 38.8%. This win secures another term for the Liberal Party, extending their decade-long governance under fresh leadership after Carney took over from Justin Trudeau just last month.

This year’s election wasn’t just about choosing a leader—it became a symbolic referendum on Trump’s increasingly aggressive stance toward Canada. Trump’s re-election and subsequent remarks undermining Canada’s economic sovereignty, including his suggestion that Canada should be annexed as the “51st state,” triggered a national outcry. That backlash seems to have worked in favour of Carney’s Liberals.

Pierre Poilievre, the 45-year-old Conservative leader and long-time politician, attempted to steer the campaign towards domestic issues like inflation and the high cost of living, factors that plagued Trudeau’s popularity in his later years. However, his perceived alignment with Trump’s style and rhetoric may have cost him crucial moderate support.

Mark Carney, 60, a former investment banker and the only person to have served as central bank governor in Canada and the UK, has never held elected office before becoming Prime Minister. However, polls consistently indicated Canadians trusted him most to counter Trump’s influence on the country’s future.

For the Liberals, tonight’s win is not just electoral—it’s historical. With their support bouncing back after trailing for months, this result marks one of the most dramatic comebacks in modern Canadian politics.

As the country prepares for another Liberal term, all eyes remain on how Carney will navigate the challenges ahead, balancing internal recovery with external diplomacy at a time of increasing geopolitical tension.
