NHAI Starts Tunnel Trial Run on Dwarka Expressway to Ease Delhi-Gurugram Traffic
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched a trial run of the newly constructed tunnel and underpasses on the Delhi stretch of the Dwarka Expressway. The trial operation, which began recently, will be conducted for three hours each day to monitor traffic movement and assess infrastructure readiness.
This tunnel project is a major step toward easing the persistent traffic congestion between Delhi and Gurugram. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the initiative is designed to enhance mobility, improve commuter safety, and provide seamless connectivity to the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport.
Built with advanced engineering techniques and equipped with modern safety features, the tunnel includes emergency exits, a centralised control room, and CCTV surveillance systems. These features ensure efficient traffic monitoring and rapid emergency response if required.
Officials said the trial run will help NHAI evaluate traffic flow, identify potential challenges, and refine safety protocols. If all parameters are met successfully, the tunnel is expected to be fully operational by June 5, 2025.
The strategic location of the tunnel is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters by diverting traffic from surface roads and reducing travel time between West Delhi and IGI Airport. It is part of a broader infrastructure upgrade plan that aims to decongest NH-48 and improve road connectivity across Delhi-NCR.
Commuters and residents have welcomed the development, hoping it will offer relief from the heavy vehicular burden that plagues this busy corridor during peak hours.
