PM Modi Inaugurates SEMICON India 2026, Announces $13.5 Billion Semiconductor Mission Phase Two

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2026 in New Delhi on September 17, highlighting India’s expanding semiconductor ecosystem and the country’s growing role in global chip manufacturing. The fifth edition of the event is being held at Yashobhoomi from September 17 to 19 under the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.”

Addressing industry leaders, international delegates, researchers, students and other participants, the Prime Minister highlighted the progress made in India’s semiconductor journey, from policy initiatives and chip design to manufacturing, testing and supply-chain development. He said chips produced at Indian plants have started reaching customers in India and abroad.

A key announcement at the event was the launch of the second phase of the India Semiconductor Mission, with an allocation of 13.5 billion dollars. The initiative is aimed at expanding capabilities across areas including chip design, manufacturing, equipment, materials, research and development, packaging and talent development.

The government also highlighted the development of a broader domestic supply chain involving equipment, chemicals, gases and materials required for semiconductor production. According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, 12 semiconductor projects had been approved under the first phase of the programme.

The event also focused on India’s talent pool and research capabilities. The government has emphasised developing skilled professionals and strengthening collaboration between industry, startups, educational institutions and researchers to support the next stage of semiconductor development.

SEMICON India 2026 brings together global companies, policymakers, investors, academia and startups, providing a platform for discussions on semiconductor technology, manufacturing, innovation, investment and skills. The three-day event is expected to showcase developments across the semiconductor and electronics value chain.
