Uttar Pradesh Renames Jalalabad as Parashurampuri
The Uttar Pradesh government has approved the renaming of Jalalabad town in Shahjahanpur district to Parashurampuri. This decision was made during a state cabinet meeting in Lucknow on Monday, continuing the government’s trend of renaming places across the state.
The proposal to change the town’s name had been under discussion for some time. Last year, the District Magistrate of Shahjahanpur recommended the change to the state government. After reviewing the proposal, the state government forwarded it to the Central Government for approval. After receiving confirmation that there were no objections from the Centre, the cabinet gave its final approval.
According to the state government, the name “Jalalabad” is believed to have originated during the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar, whose full name was Jalaluddin Mohammed Akbar. Some local accounts suggest that the town was previously known as “Dharmpuri” before its name changed during the Mughal period.
The decision is also connected to the town’s historical and religious significance. Jalalabad is home to an ancient Parashuram Temple, which has become an important religious destination in the region. Previously, the Uttar Pradesh government designated the temple area as a tourist destination and allocated around ₹20 crore for its development and beautification.
This recent name change is not an isolated decision; just days earlier, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced that Fazil Nagar in Kushinagar district would be renamed Pawagarh. In recent years, several locations in Uttar Pradesh have received new names, including Faizabad, which became Ayodhya, and Mustafabad in Lakhimpur Kheri, which was renamed Kabirdham.
Supporters of these name changes argue that they help restore the cultural and historical identity of places, while critics believe such decisions distract from more pressing governance and development issues. As with previous renaming initiatives, this latest move is expected to generate public and political discussion.
With Parashurampuri officially recognized as the new name for Jalalabad, the town joins a growing list of renamed locations in Uttar Pradesh, reflecting the state’s ongoing effort to revisit and reshape the historical identity of its towns and cities.
