Delhi Unveils Air Pollution Mitigation Plan 2025: Artificial Rain, ANPR Cameras, and Green Drive Announced
New Delhi, June 5, 2025 – In a bold and comprehensive move to combat the persistent problem of air pollution in the national capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta unveiled the Air Pollution Mitigation Plan 2025 on the eve of World Environment Day. The plan introduces a series of tech-enabled and eco-conscious policies aimed at improving Delhi’s air quality and public health.
At the heart of the initiative is a strict vehicular regulation that will come into effect from November 1, 2025. Only BS-VI, CNG, or electric commercial vehicles will be permitted to enter Delhi, significantly reducing vehicular emissions at the city’s borders.
The CM also announced that Delhi is set to witness its first artificial rain through cloud seeding technology, a pilot initiative in collaboration with IIT Kanpur. The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Delhi government and the institute aims to bring temporary relief from toxic smog during peak pollution months.
“This is a fight for our future. For years, Delhiites have struggled with dangerous air. Our dream is ‘Clean Delhi, Green Delhi, Healthy Delhi,’ and this plan is a step forward,” said CM Rekha Gupta.
In a further move toward smarter pollution control, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras will be installed at all entry points to the city and fuel stations. These AI-enabled cameras will identify and intercept end-of-life vehicles, which are a major contributor to pollution.
To tackle dust pollution, the plan mandates the installation of anti-smog guns on all high-rise commercial buildings larger than 3,000 square metres, including malls and hotels. Additionally, mist sprayers will be deployed in pollution hotspots across the city.
Reinforcing its green agenda, the Delhi government has also launched a massive tree plantation drive under the banner of “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam”. The campaign sets an ambitious target of planting 70 lakh saplings across Delhi within the year.
CM Gupta emphasized that these efforts will not only improve air quality but also promote sustainable living and enhance Delhi’s resilience to climate change.
The Air Pollution Mitigation Plan 2025 is being hailed as one of Delhi’s most aggressive and inclusive approaches to date. With active scientific collaboration, regulatory enforcement, and public participation, the government hopes to set a precedent for other Indian metros facing similar environmental challenges.
