PM Modi Plants Tree, Flags Off 200 Electric Buses on World Environment Day 2025

New Delhi, June 5, 2025 – On the occasion of  World Environment Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded two major green initiatives in the national capital — a tree plantation drive and the launch of 200 electric buses — marking India’s renewed commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable mobility.

At Bhagwan Mahavir Vanasthali Park, PM Modi led the plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign by planting a Banyan sapling, a tree symbolic of longevity and resilience. The event is part of the larger Aravalli Green Wall Project, a massive afforestation initiative aimed at re-greening the 700-kilometer-long Aravalli range.

The Aravalli Green Wall targets the creation of a 5-km-wide ecological buffer zone across 29 districts in Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Gujarat. Its objectives include increasing forest cover, restoring biodiversity, improving soil and water retention, and strengthening climate resilience in one of India’s most degraded and ecologically sensitive zones.

Beyond ecological restoration, the project also aims to generate employment and livelihood opportunities through community-led plantation drives and landscape restoration efforts.

In parallel, the Prime Minister also flagged off 200 electric buses in Delhi under the Delhi Government’s clean mobility push. This move is expected to significantly reduce vehicular emissions, combat urban air pollution, and enhance the adoption of green public transport systems in the capital.

“These actions reflect our firm belief in sustainable development. Environmental protection and economic progress can go hand in hand,” PM Modi said during the ceremony.

The 200 e-buses will be deployed across key transit corridors in Delhi and are equipped with fast-charging capabilities, real-time tracking, and zero tailpipe emissions. Officials noted that this fleet will play a crucial role in transforming Delhi’s public transport landscape into a low-carbon model.

With these twin initiatives, India not only celebrates World Environment Day but also sets an example for global climate leadership through action-oriented sustainability efforts.
