Massive Fire At Delhi Hotel Kills 21 People

At least 21 people, including several foreign nationals, lost their lives after a massive fire broke out at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, Delhi, on Wednesday morning. More than 40 individuals were rescued during a significant emergency operation carried out by firefighters, police teams, and disaster response agencies.

According to officials, the fire started around 8:50 AM in the restaurant located in the basement of the Flourish Stay hotel, a five-storey building situated in the narrow lanes of Hauz Rani. The flames quickly spread to a neighboring hotel, Micasa Inn, causing panic in the densely populated residential area that is popular among students and young professionals.

Rescue teams responded immediately after receiving the distress call. Fire officials deployed two water engines, two water bowsers, quick-response vehicles, and multiple firefighting units to control the blaze and evacuate trapped guests. Witnesses reported that several people jumped from the building to escape as thick smoke engulfed the premises. Mattresses were spread out on the ground to help reduce injuries during these escape attempts.

Officials stated that many guests were asleep when the fire broke out. The hotel reportedly housed over 40 guests, including foreigners who had come to Delhi for medical treatment.

Preliminary investigations have raised serious concerns about safety violations at the hotel. Sources indicated that the property had received permission under a bed-and-breakfast category, allowing only six rooms. However, it was allegedly operating nearly 25 rooms, including accommodations in the basement. Authorities are also verifying whether the hotel possessed a valid fire No Objection Certificate (NOC). Reports further revealed that the building had only one entry and exit point.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the incident as tragic and announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta also expressed her grief over the loss of life and assured all possible support to the affected families.

The Delhi government stated that rescue and relief operations were launched immediately by the Delhi Fire Services, Delhi Police, DDMA, and ambulance services. Authorities continue to investigate the exact cause of the fire while examining possible negligence and safety lapses.
