Delhi Chokes Under Thick Smog Post-Diwali, Air Quality Plummets to ‘Very Poor’

New Delhi: A heavy blanket of smog enveloped Delhi on Thursday morning, causing the air quality to plummet into the ‘very poor’ category following Diwali celebrations. The Air Quality Index (AQI) across the National Capital Region (NCR) reached 361 by 7 am, indicating a sharp deterioration in air quality. This year, pollution levels in Delhi have escalated due to the combined effects of Diwali fireworks and the ongoing stubble-burning season in nearby states.

Pollution Hotspots in Delhi
According to data from the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), the highest AQI readings were recorded in key locations, with RK Puram reporting the city’s worst AQI of 398 in the ‘very poor’ category. Other areas, including Sonia Vihar, Anand Vihar, and Burari, also reported AQI levels exceeding 395. In total, 36 stations in Delhi recorded AQI levels above 300, confirming widespread air quality issues.

Categories of AQI and Health Implications
The AQI is categorized into levels, each with implications for public health. Levels between 0 and 50 are considered ‘good,’ while those between 51 and 100 are ‘satisfactory,’ and levels up to 200 are ‘moderate.’ AQI readings above 200 indicate ‘poor’ air quality, with values between 301 and 400 deemed ‘very poor,’ and levels above 400 categorized as ‘severe’ to ‘severe-plus.’ With readings in the 300-400 range, health experts warn that people, especially those with pre-existing respiratory issues, may experience aggravated symptoms and a greater risk of breathing difficulties.

Impact of Firecracker Ban
Despite the Delhi government’s ban on firecrackers, reports indicate widespread defiance in parts of the city. The ban, announced on October 14, aimed to curb the manufacturing, sale, storage, and usage of firecrackers to control pollution levels. Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai had cautioned that Diwali festivities, combined with the onset of stubble-burning season, could worsen pollution levels. However, areas like Jaunapur, Punjabi Bagh, Burari, and East of Kailash witnessed significant firecracker use, contributing to a sharp rise in pollution.

AQI in Other Major Cities
Mumbai also recorded declining air quality levels, with an overall AQI of 172 in the ‘moderate’ category. Out of the city’s 22 stations, nine reported ‘poor’ air quality, with Colaba in Navy Nagar being the most polluted area at 305 AQI, putting it in the ‘very poor’ category. Other areas in Mumbai, including Sewri (284), Kandivali (252), and Byculla (224), also reported elevated AQI levels. The worsening air quality in both Delhi and Mumbai is part of a broader trend of pollution across northern and central India during the winter months.

Public Health Advisory
As smog blankets Delhi, health experts advise residents, especially children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues, to limit outdoor activities, use N95 masks when venturing outside, and utilize air purifiers indoors where possible. The Delhi government has also urged people to take preventive measures, including avoiding strenuous outdoor activities until air quality improves.
