India Boosts Naval Power with Successful Underwater Mine Test
Amid increased regional tensions, India has successfully conducted a test of the indigenously developed Multi-Influence Ground Mine (MIGM), a sophisticated underwater naval mine designed to enhance the Indian Navy’s defence capabilities. The test, undertaken by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Navy, was confirmed by the Defence Ministry on May 5, 2025.
The MIGM is tailored to detect and target modern stealth submarines and warships. The technology stems from collaboration between the Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL), Visakhapatnam, and other DRDO labs. The production partners include Bharat Dynamics Limited and Apollo Microsystems Limited.
The test was conducted with reduced explosives to simulate real-world operational scenarios. This strategic move comes at a time when the nation is boosting its coastal security following the Pahalgam attack and amid ongoing threats from across the border.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the successful test and emphasized the importance of enhancing India’s undersea warfare capabilities. He acknowledged the DRDO, Indian Navy, and industrial partners for this milestone in indigenous defence development.
With maritime threats on the rise, the MIGM strengthens India’s underwater defence strategy and sends a strong signal of deterrence to adversaries.
