PM Modi Gives Armed Forces Full Operational Freedom to Respond to Terror Attack

In a decisive move following the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given the Indian Armed Forces full operational freedom to determine the response strategy, including the mode, targets, and timing. Chairing a closed-door meeting on Tuesday with top defence and national security officials, Modi emphasized India’s unwavering resolve to deliver a “crushing blow” to terrorism.

The meeting was attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, and the chiefs of all three Armed Forces. Government sources confirmed that Modi expressed complete trust in the professionalism and capabilities of the armed forces, directing them to act without restrictions.

“They have complete operational freedom to decide on the mode, targets, and timing of our response,” a government source quoted Modi as saying during the briefing.

In a clear signal to those responsible, Modi vowed to pursue the terrorists and their backers to the “ends of the earth,” alluding to Pakistan, which India has long accused of sponsoring cross-border terrorism.

In related developments, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) has decided to suspend the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, citing serious breaches of the agreement. The CCS has also ordered the expulsion of all Pakistani nationals from India, excluding those holding long-term, diplomatic, or official visas. These individuals must leave the country by April 29.

Following the CCS decision, Union Home Minister Amit Shah personally contacted chief ministers across states, instructing them to ensure that no Pakistani national remains in India beyond the stipulated deadline. Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan also held a high-level meeting and later a video conference with chief secretaries to coordinate the enforcement of this directive.

The series of steps taken signals a strong and uncompromising stance by the Indian government in the wake of escalating tensions and continued terrorist activities. With the armed forces now having complete autonomy over operations, India’s response to the Pahalgam attack is likely to be swift, calculated, and firm.
