PM Modi Calls Trinidad & Tobago PM “Bihar Ki Beti”, Celebrates Indian Roots and Diaspora Ties
In a heartfelt address to the Indian community in Trinidad and Tobago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar as “Bihar ki Beti” (Daughter of Bihar), acknowledging her ancestral roots from Buxar, Bihar. This gesture was part of PM Modi’s ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s bond with its global diaspora.
Speaking to a gathering of Indian-origin citizens, PM Modi said,
“We are not just connected by blood or surname, we are connected by belonging. The ancestors of PM Kamla were from Bihar’s Buxar. She has also visited the place. People consider her the daughter of Bihar.”
PM Modi praised Bihar’s heritage, calling it a symbol of pride for both India and the world.
“Bihar has shown the way to the world in various fields for centuries. New opportunities will emerge from Bihar in the 21st century also,” he added.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar has made history as Trinidad and Tobago’s first female prime minister, attorney general, opposition leader, and the first woman of Indian descent to become a prime minister outside of India. She also holds the distinction of being the first woman to chair the Commonwealth of Nations.
PM Modi fondly recalled his visit to Trinidad 25 years ago, noting how the relationship between the two nations has grown. He also appreciated the cultural bridges between the countries, saying:
“Navratra, Mahashivratri and Janmashtami are celebrated here with joy, spirit and pride. Chautal and Bhaitak gana continue to thrive here.”
Interestingly, he pointed out that several cities from India—like Banaras, Patna, Kolkata, and Delhi—are also found as street names in Trinidad, showcasing the lasting Indian influence.
About 40% of Trinidad and Tobago’s population is of Indian origin, with over 556,000 people of Indian descent. Most of them are descendants of indentured laborers who arrived between 1845 and 1917. Despite the country’s small size—smaller than Jodhpur in India—the Indian community plays a significant role in its culture and economy.
In a major announcement, PM Modi stated that OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cards will now be extended to the 6th generation of Indian-origin citizens in Trinidad and Tobago.
The prime minister received a grand welcome at Piarco International Airport, greeted by PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar, 38 ministers, and four MPs. A ceremonial Guard of Honour was also presented.
This visit not only celebrated the vibrant Indian diaspora but also reaffirmed India’s commitment to strengthening its global cultural and diplomatic bonds.
