PM Modi’s Historic Visit to Croatia Boosts Bilateral Ties

In a landmark diplomatic moment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Croatia, as part of his three-nation tour that also includes Cyprus and Canada for the G7 Summit. This visit marks a significant step forward in strengthening the Indo-Croatian relationship across various strategic sectors.

During his stay in the capital city of Zagreb, PM Modi held productive discussions with Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković and President Zoran Milanović. They focused on key areas of cooperation, including defense and security, information technology, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, renewable energy, and cultural exchange. Notably, the two leaders identified opportunities for collaboration in emerging sectors such as semiconductors, shipbuilding, digitalization, and connectivity.

Both countries signed four Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing cooperation in agriculture, science and technology, cultural exchange, and extending the Hindi Chair at the University of Zagreb. PM Modi emphasized the growing cultural connection between the two nations and appreciated Croatia’s interest in Indian traditions, Indology, and Yoga

Expressing his gratitude for the warm welcome, PM Modi shared on social media, “I felt at home in Croatia,” and thanked his counterpart for personally showing him around the culturally rich city center of Zagreb. He described the visit as a “new chapter in the shared journey of friendship and extensive cooperation.”

President Zoran Milanović and PM Plenković echoed similar sentiments, affirming their commitment to deepening trade and cultural ties while jointly addressing global challenges. In a toast, PM Plenković celebrated the enduring friendship between the two countries and expressed hope for a prosperous future built on mutual respect and shared goals.

The leaders also discussed security challenges, particularly in the area of counter-terrorism cooperation. PM Modi expressed appreciation for Croatia’s solidarity following the recent terrorist attacks in Pahalgam, India.

This historic visit lays the foundation for a renewed and forward-looking partnership between India and Croatia, based on shared democratic values, economic collaboration, and strong people-to-people ties.
