Sports helping people shape careers, ameliorate lives: Duggal

Senior Sports Journalists Saurabh Duggal today delivered an online guest lecture to the students of the Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Technology, SGT University. He said that sports journalism is not just about reporting sporting activities but it is much more. He said over the past few years, sports have led to women empowerment, social upliftment of the families of poor sportspersons and also helped in bridging the caste divide in the caste-ridden society Sportspersons.

A sports journalist with experience of over 15 years and author of ‘Akhada’ –  authorised biography of Mahavir Singh Phogat, Duggal said due to sports, many women stars of India hockey and other sports have been able to ameliorate the status of their families. He said in Haryana alone more than Rs 250 crore has been pumped into the rural economy by way of prize money to sportspersons which have eventually helped the rural economy grow. He said much like education, sports is also helping youths shape their careers and ameliorate their lives,

He said that sports journalism represents the feeling of patriotism. Equating sports with cinema and other forms of entertainment, Duggal said in sports the players portray their own character rather than others’.

Duggal said that while newspapers and television had their limitation, digital media has been able to expand the reach of sports.

While introducing Duggal, Dean Mass Communication and Media Technology Prof. Sushil Manav said that Duggal wrote. A book named ‘Akhara’ on the struggle of Geeta and Babita Phogat’s father Mahabir Phogat on whom Dangal movie was made by Aamir Khan. He said Duggal has rich experience of working with Hindustan Times and covering several major sporting events

During the program, the students of the Faculty of Mass Communication and Media Technology also asked many questions to Duggal regarding his experience and challenges in the field of Journalism. Duggal replied to all the questions of students and motivated them with thoughts.

Thanking Senior Sports journalists Saurabh Duggal for his lecture, Shashi Kumar Pandey, Associate Professor, said that the students and faculty members learned and were inspired by the experience of Duggal. Kranti Anand, Biswambhar Bose, Saleem Javed, Asif Hussain, Tejee Isha, Tushar Gulia, Madhav Sharma, and Abhishek Dubey, all the teaching and non-teaching staff attended the lecture.
