IIM Bangalore to Open First International Campus in Indonesia Under NEP 2020
India’s leading management institutions are increasingly expanding their reach beyond national borders, reflecting the country’s growing influence in global education. In a significant announcement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed that the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore will establish its first international campus in Indonesia. This announcement was made during a joint statement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, marking another milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen academic partnerships worldwide.
The new campus will be located in the Singhasari Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Malang, Indonesia. This initiative aligns with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages India’s premier educational institutions to establish campuses overseas and enhance their international presence. The move is expected to deepen educational cooperation between India and Indonesia while positioning Indonesia as a regional hub for quality management education.

The Indonesian campus will offer programs designed to meet the demands of today’s evolving business environment. Its curriculum will focus on five major themes: global supply chains, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, climate sustainability, and healthcare management. Students will benefit from interactions with industry experts and internationally recognized leaders, making the learning experience more practical and globally relevant.
The project will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will begin with executive education programs aimed at senior executives, business leaders, entrepreneurs, and public sector professionals. Based on the success of these initial programs over the first two years, the institute plans to launch full-fledged degree programs in the second phase.
This campus will primarily serve Indonesian students while also welcoming learners from neighboring Southeast Asian countries. Additionally, students enrolled in Indonesia will have opportunities to visit the Bengaluru campus through short academic exchange programs, promoting stronger academic and cultural connections.
Although this will be IIM Bangalore’s first overseas campus, it joins a growing list of Indian institutions that are expanding globally. Institutes such as IIM Ahmedabad and IIT Delhi have already established or announced international campuses, reflecting India’s ambition to become a trusted global destination for higher education.
With this expansion, IIM Bangalore is taking a significant step towards building internationally connected classrooms, promoting knowledge exchange, and preparing future business leaders with skills that align with the demands of a rapidly changing global economy.
