MoD Urges Media to Respect Privacy of Armed Forces Families Amid Operation Sindoor

New Delhi: Amid the heightened sensitivity surrounding Operation Sindoor, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) has issued a stern advisory urging media houses to respect the privacy of senior armed forces personnel and their families.

The advisory comes in response to reports that some media personnel have been approaching the private residences of senior military officers, attempting to contact family members, and pursuing stories unrelated to their professional responsibilities. The ministry described such actions as “deeply inappropriate and potentially compromising to the dignity, privacy, and safety” of the individuals involved.

“In the context of ongoing operations such as Operation Sindoor, senior officers across the armed forces have come into the public eye due to their leadership roles,” the advisory noted. “It has come to the Ministry’s attention that media focus has crossed the line from professional coverage to personal intrusion.”

While acknowledging the importance of a free press and the media’s role in informing the public about national security matters, the ministry reiterated that armed forces families are private citizens and must be treated with “due respect and sensitivity.”

To ensure media conduct aligns with ethical standards during such operations, the MoD outlined a four-point advisory:

  1. Refrain from visiting or attempting to contact the private residences or family members of serving or retired armed forces personnel, unless formally invited or cleared through official channels.

  2. Avoid publishing or broadcasting personal details, including home addresses, family photos, or any non-operational content not serving public interest.

  3. Focus coverage on the professional and operational aspects of armed forces leadership and activities.

  4. Respect privacy and operational confidentiality, especially during ongoing operations or periods of elevated national security concern.

The advisory emphasizes the importance of responsible journalism and cautions against sensationalism that could compromise personal dignity or national interests.

The ministry closed the statement by expressing appreciation for the media’s role in covering the achievements and sacrifices of the armed forces. It also emphasized a commitment to transparency and constructive engagement, while appealing for a balanced and respectful approach during sensitive times.
