CM Nitish Kumar Inaugurates Twin Towers of PMCH, Set to Become India’s Largest Hospital

Patna, May 4, 2025 — Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the newly constructed twin towers of the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH), comprising 1,117 beds, in a major step forward in Bihar’s flagship healthcare redevelopment initiative. He also unveiled a 22-foot-high centenary monument, commemorating 100 years of PMCH’s service since its establishment in 1925.

The inauguration marks the completion of Phase 1 of the extensive Rs 5,540 crore PMCH redevelopment project, which aims to transform the historic institution into India’s largest and the world’s second-largest hospital by March 2027, with a total capacity of 5,462 beds and an annual intake of 250 medical students.

Ensure the project is completed on time. Once finished, PMCH will offer state-of-the-art medical care that eliminates the need for patients to travel to other states,” CM Nitish Kumar emphasized during the event.

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the Chief Minister toured several key areas of the new towers, including the emergency ward, cancer diagnostic centre, VIP patient rooms, nurses’ stations, and the air ambulance landing zone. He was accompanied by senior ministers and top health officials.

He also visited the ninth, third, and first floors, closely inspecting the new facilities and reviewing emergency response logistics. From the rooftop, Kumar surveyed ambulance exit routes and the surrounding cityscape, highlighting the integration of modern design with accessibility.

PMCH was originally established during the British era when Bihar included present-day Jharkhand and Odisha. Odisha became a separate state in 1937, followed by Jharkhand in 2000. The redevelopment project, sanctioned in December 2018, saw its foundation stone laid on February 6, 2021.

Once completed, the modernized PMCH is expected to significantly improve healthcare delivery in eastern India, reinforcing Bihar’s commitment to advancing public health infrastructure.
